Fearing Recession, Americans Are Cutting Back on Health Care
A new QualityHealth.com survey shows that Americans are cutting back on health-care spending and taking preventative health measures to stay healthy.
JERSEY CITY, NJ - With fears of a recession looming, Americans are cutting back on the amount they spend on health care, according to the third installment of QualityHealth.com's HealthOpin survey.
The survey asked 10,103 Americans-predominantly baby boomer women-if they were cutting back on health-care spending due to fears about the economy, and 48 percent answered yes. Of those answering yes, 29 percent cited visits to the doctor as an expense they were cutting down on, 26 percent visits to the dentist, 22 percent prescription medications, and 23 percent indicated "other" costs.
To avoid going to the doctor and incurring costs, most Americans are also taking preventative measures to stay healthy. HealthOpin III showed that 72 percent of respondents were taking preventative measures, such as taking vitamins (48 percent), exercising more (45 percent), and eating healthier (60 percent.)*
"This survey shows that due to fears of a recession, Americans are cutting back on some necessities, such as spending on health care," said Peter Burch, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Marketing Technology Solutions, the owner of QualityHealth.com. "Websites like QualityHealth.com offer a viable source of health information that can help people save money."
As the third installment in its HealthOpin poll series, QualityHealth.com polled its database of registered members between March 29 and April 3, collecting responses from 10,103 consumers interested in health matters. Survey respondents were 87 percent women and 13 percent men, and the majority of them were between the ages of 35 and 64. The survey's margin of error is +/- 3 percent.
According to comScore, Inc., the global leader of measurement in the digital world, QualityHealth.com, with approximately 5 million unique visitors per month, ranks among the most visited health sites on the Web.
