Recession Causing Stress, Tough Choices on Healthcare
Survey of 10,000 Shows Economic Fears Could Be Harming America's Health
JERSEY CITY, NJ - With many Americans convinced that the country is officially in the midst of a recession, some are turning to vices such as drinking,
smoking, or eating to cope with this stress, according to QualityHealth.com's latest HealthOpin survey. QualityHealth.com is a top ranked consumer health Web site and a main competitor to sites like
WebMD and Yahoo!Health.
The survey, which polled 10,123 Americans, primarily women, revealed that 83 percent believe the current state of the economy is causing more stress in their lives. To deal with this stress, 20 percent
of survey respondents said they are turning to drinking, smoking, or eating; 25 percent said they are exercising more; 21 percent said they are working more; 5 percent said they are taking more vacations;
and 21 percent said they are taking "other" measures to deal with the pressure.
The survey also asked respondents how the recession is affecting the personal health choices they make. Forty-one (41) percent said they are making fewer visits to the doctor; eight percent are having
fewer elective surgical procedures; 13 percent are cutting back on their health insurance coverage levels; 22 percent are buying less prescription medication; and 16 percent said the recession is affecting
"other" personal health choices.
"At a time when Americans are restricting their health care related activities to cut costs, it's more important than ever to make smart, informed decisions about managing stress," said Peter Burch,
Marketing and Sales SVP for Marketing Technology Solutions, the owner of QualityHealth.com. "A good place to start is on Web sites like QualityHealth, which offer a variety of facts, programs, and ideas
on how to deal with anxiety without resorting to potentially destructive behavior."
As the sixth installment in its "HealthOpin" poll series, QualityHealth.com polled its database of registered members between July 8 and July 10, 2008, collecting responses from 10,123 consumers
interested in health matters. Survey respondents were 90 percent female and 10 percent male, with the majority between the ages of 35 and 54. The survey's margin of error is +/- 3 percent.
